Many Christians say that it would be great to be a carpenter—because you’d be following in the footsteps of Jesus. Well, that’s true, I don’t deny this of course. However, I say that it’s great to be a Designer—and follow in the steps of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit—the greatest designer ever (carpentry and much, much more)!
After all, He created the Heaven and the Earth, people, animals and everything else. Because of this, I wondered where the word ‘design’ and ‘designer’ was mentioned in the Holy Bible. Well, it happens to be 10 times (in the NIV). Here they are for reference with links to the passages on BibleGateway. Enjoy…
1
Ezekiel 43:11 …and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow all its regulations.
2
2 Chronicles 24:13 The men in charge of the work were diligent, and the repairs progressed under them. They rebuilt the temple of God according to its original design and reinforced it.
3
Acts 17:29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by man’s design and skill.
4
1 Kings 7:8 And the palace in which he was to live, set farther back, was similar in design. Solomon also made a palace like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married.
He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as craftsmen, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them master craftsmen and designers.
6
Exodus 38:23 …with him was Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan—a craftsman and designer, and an embroiderer in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen.)
7
Exodus 31:4 …to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze,
8 (same as previous, but different passage)
Exodus 35:32 …to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze,
9
2 Chronicles 2:14 …whose mother was from Dan and whose father was from Tyre. He is trained to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, stone and wood, and with purple and blue and crimson yarn and fine linen. He is experienced in all kinds of engraving and can execute any design given to him. He will work with your craftsmen and with those of my Lord…
10
2 Chronicles 26:15 In Jerusalem he made machines designed by skillful men for use on the towers and on the corner defenses to shoot arrows and hurl large stones. His fame spread far and wide, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful.
Do you follow in the footsteps of Jesus ‘in the design realm’? If so, what do you do. I’d like to hear from you in the comments section below. God Bless…

Nice post Andrew – it’s always great to meet a fellow believer and I appreciate your biblical perspective on design.
I’m a designer and also an entrepreneur, and I have a similar perspective when it comes to creating companies – God is the original Creator and we are made in the image of God. So it’s natural to be creative!

Great post. I actually named my Business “Studio 35″ after Exodus 35:35 about 4 years ago (I do Graphic Design for Ministries). Keep up the good work.
